Welcome to BMX bandits 2
It’s been 42 years since I released the original BMX Bandits — a film that broke new ground by putting BMX bikes and the kids who loved them front and center on the big screen. Back in 1984, we made history by showcasing a then-emerging sport in wild, fun, and imaginative ways — riding where bikes weren’t meant to be ridden — and the result was a global cult classic that resonated deeply with a generation of young fans.
Over the years, I’ve been approached countless times to remake the original or develop a sequel. But until now, none of those ideas felt quite right. I wanted something that not only lived up to the legacy of the original but pushed the boundaries in a way that would truly excite today’s audiences — both the new generation of BMXers and the adults who grew up on the original.
In the four decades since BMX Bandits first hit cinemas, BMX itself has exploded. What began as a niche, underground activity is now a massive, global industry with a passionate following. The evolution has been driven in part by the rise of online media — YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok have all helped grow the culture — as well as the backing of major sponsors like Red Bull. BMX is now faster, bolder, and more innovative than ever before.
Today’s bikes are tougher, the riders are stronger, and the tricks more jaw-dropping. BMX now appeals to everyone from 10-year-olds to riders in their 30s, pushing physical and creative limits with every new edit that drops online. That’s why BMX Bandits 2 is finally happening — the time is right.
This new chapter will bring the same sense of adventure and rebellion that defined the original, but with next-level action, storytelling, and visuals. We’re raising the bar by shooting all the BMX sequences in high-definition — a world first for a BMX feature film — so the action will feel immersive, visceral, and real. Expect bigger stunts, crazier lines, and “coming at ya” sequences that will have audiences holding their breath.
But this isn’t just about adrenaline. The story is set in today’s socially and environmentally conscious world, with themes and messages that will connect with both kids and adults alike. We’re building a crossover film that speaks to generations — those discovering BMX for the first time, and those who never really left it behind.
One of Australia’s top BMX pros, Red Bull-sponsored Corey Bohan, even produced a tribute to the original film, crediting BMX Bandits as his first inspiration to ride. His homage, available on Red Bull TV
via YouTube (link in the menu), is just one example of how deeply the original film continues to inspire riders today.
With BMX Bandits 2, we’re not just making a sequel. We’re creating a new milestone in BMX cinema. And we can’t wait to share the ride with you.
